Highlights from the Third Annual NAFER Conference

NAFER-2014-ConferenceThe third annual NAFER (National Association of Federal Equity Receivers) Conference was held last month in Washington, DC with 124 professionals in attendance. The conference has seen a dramatic increase in attendance since the first conference two years ago that had about 60 attendees and has now become a “who’s who” of top restructuring professionals.

Many attendees felt that this year’s NAFER conference stood out because of two key aspects: the ability to interact with fellow attendees and the substance of the panel sessions.

In terms of sessions, the conference included a variety of speakers from across the financial spectrum:

  • Irving Picard, Trustee overseeing the Bernard T. Madoff case
  • Rob Kay, Chief Litigation Counsel, Bureau of Consumer Protection, Federal Trade Commission
  • Chuck Shaeffer, CNBC Executive Producer of ‘American Greed’
  • The first-ever judges panel – a huge hit with the attendees who requested that a similar panel be held during next year’s conference

While the conference was educational, it certainly had many moments of fun such as when Greg Hays, Managing Principal of Hays Financial Consulting, provided attendees with their very own Charles Ponzi bobblehead! In addition, attendees had the opportunity to interact during the pre-conference welcome reception, over meals and breaks as well as during the BMS-sponsored evening cocktail reception.

During the conference, outgoing NAFER president Steve Donell, President of FedReceiver, Inc., passed the baton to incoming president, Ira Bodenstein, Member of Shaw Fishman – both of whom are BMS clients. Other BMS clients in attendance included Lee Buchwald; President at Buchwald Capital Advisors, LLC; Gil Miller, Sr. Managing Member at Rocky Mountain Advisory; Alex Moglia, Founder and President of Moglia Advisors; Tom Seaman, Principal of Thomas Seaman Company; and Robert Wing, Of Counsel at Ray Quinney & Nebeker.

We look forward to seeing even more BMS clients get involved with NAFER as well as attend next year’s conference in San Diego, CA.
