Tech Tip:

Step-by-Step Guide to Compact Outlook for Microsoft 2003 and Earlier

If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2003 or earlier versions, please follow the steps below to Compact your outlook.pst file.

Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and earlier versions of Outlook (Maximum 2 GB pst file size)

  1. On on the “Tools” menu, then select “E-mail Accounts”.
  2. Click on the “Data Files” tab.
  3. Click on the “Settings” button.
  4. Click on “Compact Now”.
  5. When the compact operation is finished, click “OK” twice.
  6. Click on “Next”, and then “Finish”.

When it finishes compacting, your .pst file will be smaller and load faster!

PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT INTERRUPT THE COMPACT PROCEDURE BEFORE IT FINISHES!!  When it runs, it will look like it is not doing anything, but it really is compacting the database.  This can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, especially if you have never compacted your .pst file before.
