Tech Tip:

“Back Up Continuously” Setting Not Recommended for Carbonite Pro Users

If you are using Carbonite Pro to back up your data to the cloud, we recommend that you check your backup settings now to make sure that you are not using the default “Back up Continously” setting and use the “Back up once a day” or ““Do not back up during certain hours” settings instead. Backing up continuously has been discovered to cause problems for some CaseLink users.

We are recommending that all Carbonite Pro users check their current settings and, if necessary, make this quick change to their backup schedule.

This article will walk you through the simple steps you need to take to prevent the possibility of a future problem with your data.

Step 1: Edit Carbonite Pro Settings

Open Your Carbonite Pro Settings panel, as shown in the screenshot below. Please click on the link labeled “Edit settings,” which appears next to the headline “Online Backup” in purple letters.

Step 2: Check your Backup Schedule Settings

Look at the current settings for your online backup schedule. There are three options listed: back up continuously, back up once a day, and do not back up during certain hours. In the screenshot below, you will see that “Back up continuously” is chosen.

If you have not made any changes to the backup schedule before, then you should see “Back up continuously” chosen as that is the default setting by Carbonite Pro. You can also see the word “Recommended” next to this choice in orange. Although Carbonite Pro recommends backing up continuously, this setting does not work with the dynamic nature of databases such as CaseLink. We strongly request that you change this setting to “Back up once a day” or “Do not back up during certain hours.”

Step 3: Choose an Alternate Setting for your Backup Schedule

If you choose “Back up once a day,” Carbonite Pro will automatically back up late at night, when your computer is most likely not being used. You can also customize the schedule by telling Carbonite Pro not to back up during certain hours. This is useful if, for example, you sometimes work late hours and want to ensure that the computer is not trying to perform backup tasks at that time.

In the screenshot below, the option “Do not back up during certain hours” has been chosen. Using pull down menus, the program is set to not back up between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm. Choose the hours that best fit your schedule. You can always change the times later if you need to do so.

Step 4: Save Your Settings

Whichever backup option you choose, make sure to click on the green “Save” button at the bottom of the screen when you’re done.

Making the changes suggested in this article in a timely fashion should prevent you from experiencing computer problems related to this issue. However, if you need further help with settings or making changes to the online backup schedule, please contact the BMS Support Center via email or call 800-634-7734 ext. 6. We’ll be happy to assist you.

Post-Encryption Support

Remember your Encryption Password! Your data must be decrypted before BMS can troubleshoot your computer issues.

When calling the BMS Support Center pre-encryption, a hardware technician could remotely log into into your computer and troubleshoot the problem – many times without you needing to be present.

However, post-encryption, the process requires additional time and resources. Now, our hardware technicians must first decrypt the data on your computer which requires you to be present and can take up to a day to complete. Only once your computer has been decrypted can the BMS hardware technicians begin troubleshooting your actual issue.
